Youth Development
The California Communities Program (CCP) is designed to strengthen leadership capacities of local citizens, fortify community self-governance, and enhance local and regional economies. CCP projects are carried out through a partnership with advisors from the University of California Cooperative Extension. CCP funds a small program that assists graduate students working on projects through Cooperative Extension offices. Graduate students are supervised by Cooperative Extension advisors.
Merced County's internship project for 2006 involves mapping youth resource assets. Stephanie Clendenin, a student from California State University, Chico, worked as intern during the summer in Merced's Cooperative Extension office. She compiled data including youth development programs offered throughout the county. The information consists of educational/vocational, faith-based, and other youth development programs. Stephanie applied Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology in order to map locations of available programs. This created a resource for parents, youth, and other community members who are interested in finding programs to become involved in.
